Mike Miles served as head coach of the University of Dayton Crew since its inception in 1991, and continued in that same capacity as it moved to the varsity level in 1996. He retired from the UD in 2003, after leading the NCAA Division 1 crew to be one of the top non-scholarship programs in the country.
Miles was named Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year in 2002 after guiding the Flyers varsity eight to a 2nd place finish at the A-10 Championships, defeating seven scholarship programs and finishing seconds behind the nationally-ranked UMass Minutemen. That year the Flyers 8 also finished in the finals of the Avaya Collegiate National Championships. In both 1996 and 2000, Miles coached UD’s Lightweight 4 to a gold medal at the A-10 Championships. He also was instrumental in establishing the Atlantic 10 Rowing Championship.
In 1996, he co-founded the Dayton Youth Rowing Program, a program sponsored by Dayton 5 Rivers MetroParks for high school students. He also coached at the US Rowing Junior National Team Development Camp in 1998. One of Miles’ products was two-time All-American Bernadette Marten, who graduated from UD in 2000. That year, she was named Atlantic 10 Student-Athlete of the Year and was a Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association All-American. Marten was a member of the U.S. National women’s eight boat who won a gold medal at the 2002 FISA World Rowing Championship.
In addition to coaching UD, Miles has coached his wife Trish, an accomplished rower who won the 1999 U.S. National Club Championships in the lightweight singles and the prestigious Head of the Charles in Boston. He is a US Rowing certified coach.
Mike, a 1984 graduate of Cornell University and two-time letterman in rowing, is a Senior Associate with Booz Allen Hamilton Inc, and supports engineering analysis at Wright-Patterson AFB.
Trish Miles
Trish Miles is the head coach for the Dayton Boat Club master's women's program, and is also helping provide direction and coaching to the Junior women's team. Along with her husband Mike, Trish was one of the initial coaches and directors of the University of Dayton Crew in 1991, the program the brought the sport of rowing to the city of Dayton. Last year her master's women's eight took home the gold at the USRowing Midwest Regional Championships. She is a US Rowing certified coach.
Trish began her rowing career at the College of St Benedict (Minnesota) in 1984, and continued to row with clubs in Minneapolis and Cincinnati. In 1996, Trish began to train seriously, and that training has paid off in elite athlete status for the mother of four. She has won the national championships in the lightweight single, medaled many times at the US Nationals in the lightweight single, open single, and in the double. In 2000 Trish won the prestigious Head of the Charles in Boston, edging out a 1999 world champion and also a silver medalist just returning from the Olympics the prior month. She regularly finishes in the finals of the Royal Canadian Henley Regatta.
In 2003 Trish travelled to Boston (with fellow Dayton Boat Club rower Cindy Carlson) as a member of the US Indoor Rowing Team. Competing at the World Indoor Rowing Championships (also known as CRASH-B), Trish finished third and received a coveted 'hammer' bronze medal behind competitors from Britain and Germany.
Trish and Mike have four children, Madeline, Patrick, Matthew and Bridget.
Matt Szozda

Matt rowed in high school for the Toledo Metropolitan Rowing Club. During his time there, he was elected team captain and competed in various races across the midwest and at the Head of the Charles. Matt continued his rowing career at the University of Dayton. At UD, he was highly competitive at regattas including The Dad Vail Regatta, SIRA, and MACRA. Matt was also elected vice president, and equipment chair to the club's governing body.
Matt's coaching experience includes novice men/women, varsity men, and masters rowing. Currently he is head coach of the Dayton Boat Club Masters and the Dayton Boat Club Junior Men. This will be his second year with the Masters and his first year heading the Men's program. His crews have medaled in various events spanning both scull and sweep categories throughout the midwest. In the Spring of 2011, his Men's 4x qualified to compete at the national level. Matt is also a Visual Arts teacher at Centerville City Schools.

Kristin is in her first year as head coach of the Dayton Boat Club Junior novice womens program. Kristin is a 2011 graduate from the University of Dayton with a degree in Civil Engineering. She started her rowing career during her freshman year of college and rowed in the Novice 8 and Lightweight 4. Sophomare year, she switched to coxing and coxed through her senior year, serving as the coxswain for the 2nd Varsity 8 sophomore year, and the coxswain for the 1st Varsity 8 her junior and senior years. Kristin was named to the All-Conference team for the 2010-2011 season and coxed the boat that finished with a gold medal in the Varsity 8 for the first time in UD's history at the Atlantic 10 conference.
Greg Piepmeier
Greg is in his 4th year coaching for DBC. He began coaching for the men's team during the fall of 2007, he moved on to coach novice women the following year. He has been assisting with the coaching of the varsity women since Spring of 2010. His personal rowing accomplishments include: Rowed 4 years for Cincinnati Junior Rowing Club, winning gold at Midwest Championships in lightweight 4 in 2004, lightweight 8 2005, lightweight 8 2006, and silver in the lightweight 4 in 2006. Rowed 4 years at the University of Dayton, winning gold in the lightweight 4 at the MACRA regional championship regatta in 2009 and silver in the varsity 4 at the Dad Vail Regatta. Rowed for Pennsylvania Athletic Club during the summer of 2010 winning gold in the lightweight 8 and silver in the lightweight 4 at the USRowing Club National Championships.
